Magnolia grandiflora

This native tree is commonly known as the southern magnolia. It produces large, white, showy, lemon citronella-scented flowers in late spring. Grown for its attractive, shiny green leaves and fragrant flowers, it has a long history in the Southern United States.

There are around 80 species of magnolia all around the world in Asia, the Caribbean, Central, North, and South America. Songbirds use magnolias for shelter and as a food source. Squirrels, opossum, quail, wild turkeys, and deer will eat the leaves, barks, and twigs of the tree. Beetles are attracted to flowers.

Magnolias have leaves that tend to be dark green in color. they have large cup-shaped flowers that vary in color and bloom in the spring. Magnolias do not produce nectar and are typically pollinated by beetles.

They are mainly used as landscape trees and shrubs. They are best planted in a sheltered location to avoid wind damage. They are not drought tolerant.
